From 25 to 27 February, the Programme Office in Bishkek (POiB), within the framework of the project “Reducing the risk of illicit trafficking of SALW, CA and explosives across the border of the Kyrgyz Republic”, supported a capacity-building training for the K-9 Unit of the State Border Service of the Kyrgyz Republic. The activity was funded with the assistance from the UK government.
The training aimed to enhance national efforts to reduce the risk of illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW), conventional ammunition (CA) and explosives across the country’s borders.
The training was delivered with the participation of an international expert from the United Kingdom. The programme combined theoretical sessions with practical exercises and introduced international good practices in the deployment of service dogs in border security operations.
A total of 12 representatives (11 men and 1 woman) from the Ministry of Interior, State Border Service, State Committee for National Security, Customs Service and State Penitentiary Service of the Kyrgyz Republic participated in the training. The activity placed particular emphasis on building trust and strengthening inter-agency co-operation among relevant national authorities responsible for border security and law enforcement.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Embassy of the United Kingdom, underscoring the importance of international partnership and donor support in addressing shared security challenges.
By enhancing practical skills, promoting dialogue and fostering co-ordination, the training contributes to strengthening national capacities to effectively prevent and combat illicit trafficking threats, ultimately reinforcing the national security of the Kyrgyz Republic.
